Brighton businesses oppose Western Road red route

Businesses in Brighton are urging the city council to rethink plans to introduce a red route on Western Road.
Resurfacing work is due to start on 28 September and last about 45 days. Once completed, stopping will be banned along the route, with fines of up to £70.
Traders say the restrictions could hurt businesses and put jobs at risk. Real Patisserie owner Alastair Gourlay said previous roadworks had already caused his shop’s trade to fall by 7% to 8%.
The council says the scheme is intended to tackle illegal and antisocial parking, improve traffic flow and make the road safer. Ten loading bays and additional disabled parking spaces are also planned.
Some businesses are reportedly raising money for a legal challenge, while nearby resident Jo Hemmings said the changes could be “the last straw” for small businesses.
The council’s cabinet is expected to approve the scheme in September.
