A woman has suffered potentially life-changing injuries after she was struck by a van that mounted the pavement in Rye.

The woman and a man were hit by a white Mercedes Vito outside a shop on East Street at around 13:30 BST on Friday, according to Sussex Police.

Both pedestrians were taken to hospital for treatment.

The 37-year-old van driver, from Willesborough in Kent, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.

PC Sam Bourne said the area was particularly busy when the collision happened and appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

Police closed East Street at its junction with High Street while emergency crews treated those involved, examined the scene and arranged for the damaged vehicle to be removed.

A shopfront was also damaged in the collision.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
